0.5M EDTA
EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) is a white powder. It dissolves in alkaline solutions such as sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, and ammonia solutions, with slight solubility in water, but is insoluble in organic solvents like ethanol. Its disodium salt is more widely used. Since EDTA can bind to divalent metal ions like Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Mn²⁺, and Fe²⁺—and since many nucleases and certain proteases rely on Mg²⁺ for their activity—EDTA is commonly employed as an inhibitor of nucleases and proteases. It is also frequently utilized to counteract the inhibitory effects of heavy metal ions on enzymatic activity.
