Mycoplasma contamination is a common issue in cell culture processes. Unlike bacterial or fungal contamination, mycoplasma cannot be detected by the naked eye and does not significantly affect the cells' growth rate. However, mycoplasma contamination has been shown to alter the synthesis of host cell DNA, RNA, and proteins, as well as induce chromosomal abnormalities.
